Conducting research

Researching a unit/company
Research into the Forming Corps of The RLC is not always easy due to their composition from many hundreds of units and small sub-units. Even when units clearly existed as part of one of the Forming Corps, they may have been too small to be individually recorded in any archive. However, in many cases it is possible to find references to these units in the official Corps journals which are held on this website.

Researching a person
If you are researching a person, you may find references to officers and soldiers amongst various records. The Journals and Gazettes on this web site do refer to people who receive awards (for service, gallantry, sporting or educational), are promoted, or in some cases where they have married or retired. It is always worth searching our database to see if there is a reference. However, in most cases, you should start your research by obtaining the relevant service record of the individual concerned. We have provided some guidance on how to do this in the "Research Topics" panel on the left.

Vehicle records
We have records for around 210,000 vehicles on this web site. If you know the original registration number of your vehicle you can search for it on this web site. If you do not know this number, we may be able to trace the vehicle from its chassis number. See searching vehicle records.

Finally, if all else fails, please contact me, the webmaster for this site. I cannot conduct research for you, but may be able to advise you on how to proceed
