Obituary for BEER, Philip J.

two.jpg - Philip J. BEER * 1943 - †January 2008 RAOC Junior Leader January 1959 (Purchased discharge in Nov 1959) Desmond T Whiting (ex RAOC Junior Leader) (Army Benevolent Fund North Devon) writes: Philip (PJ) Beer, enlisted into the RAOC Junior Leaders in 1959. He did not pass-out into man's service, because, after 10 months his parents encouraged him to leave via 'the buy out scheme'. Those 10 months in the Junior Leaders Battalion altered Phil's view on life completely, and two years later he enlisted into his local infantry Regiment, the Devonshire & Dorset's: where he served as a regular for nine years, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Thereafter, he served for a further 15 years in the Regiment's TA Battalion. During his time in the TA, and in later years, although suffering from incurable cancer, he was an avid fundraiser for military charities, most notably the Royal British Legion. Phil subsequently died in January 2008. Click here to read an Obituary-Thread on RAOConLine Any details, memories or photographs that you may have would be most welcome.
