Mathews_GAJ.jpg - Conductor Gordon AJ Mathews (Badgie/Lofty) *1908 - †18th September 1961 RAOC Boys Soldier at Hilsea - 2 Mar 1934 to 21 Sep 1936 Died in Singapore - See below. Captain E.W. Shrimpton writes in the RAOC Corps Gazette: It is with deep regret that I must report the sudden and tragic passing of Conductor G.A.J. Mathews at 443 BAD, Singapore, on 18th September, 1961. "Badgie" or "Lofty" enlisted as a Boy into the Corps at Hilsea on 2nd March 1934, serving at Bramley and Aldershot. He was appointed Bugler in March 1935 and eventually posted to the ranks 21st September 1936, and served as a clerk, again in Aldershot and Bramley. He served in Palestine from 1938 to 1944 when he returned to UK. He was in BAOR in 1945, UK again in 1951 and then 9 BAD MELF (1953) and Berlin (1955-58). His last station was 443 BAD where he arrived in March 1959. There are many of us in the Corps who knew Conductor Mathews as a fellow one was always very glad to meet.. We knew him as a thorough, hard working, loyal an conscientious Corpsman in every respect. He was one who would always be "there" whether in the light of duty, or Corps Association. As can be seen from his career, his experience was vast, and his passing will leave a gap that will be most difficult to fill. To his wife Kathleen and children Carol Ann (16), Michael John (14) and Pamela Jane (12) we of the Corps tender our heartfelt sympathy. Their loss is extremely great and most tragic. Mrs. Mathews and the children are returning to UK on 29th September, 1961, to stay with Conductor Mathews' mother... (ed. address not copied). Any details, memories or a photograph that you may have would be most welcome.
