It is my sad task to report the death of Hugh McCutcheon who was on the Permanent Staff as a S/Sgt RAEC instructor at Arborfield until he left to take a commission in 1957. However, those who remember 'Mac' will recall his involvement in school activities far beyond his normal instructional work. A talented bagpipe player, he organised and ran the school pipe band, and with his wife, Margaret, taught Highland Dancing as an extra mural activity. Many of the boys who came into his orbit in the middle - late fifties will recall a kindly, soft spoken and highly intelligent man who was always willing to give help and assistance and a firm, guiding hand. I was fortunate enough to meet him again in 1960 when I was posted to the Depot of the RAOC at Deepcut and discovered that he was on the P/Staff of the RAOC Junior Leaders with the rank of Lieutenant. Our paths then diverged until many years later when I met him at our reunion in 2007 (if I recall correctly) This time we were both much older, of course, but still the same old 'Mac', who retired from the army with the rank of Major in the RAEC, but still remained a member of the AOBA. Then I discovered that he lived in Hythe - just over Southampton Water from where I lived, and I was able to give him a lift back to the Hythe Ferry after the reunion. Mac had an active role in the local pipe bands around the Southampton area until ill health forced him to give it up, but he was partly instrumental in getting me involved in pipe bands again after many years. A lovely man whose funeral was held at 1400hrs on the 10th April at the: Southampton Crematorium East Chapel. Address: Bassett Green Rd, Southampton SO16 3QB
